For some people, taking city tours, visiting breweries, and lying out on the beach just isn’t enough. These tourists want a trip filled with adventure; one that’s off the beaten path. Adventure travel is a specialized type of travel that isn’t filled with the typical tour buses and bed-and-breakfasts. Adventure travel engulfs a more exploratory sense of the word “travel”. Adventure travelers would rather hike up a mountain, trek through a jungle, or ride white water rapids than sit in an air conditioned bus and be chauffeured from place to place.

However, although adventure travelers don’t partake in all-inclusive resort stays, adventure travel can still be quite expensive. That’s because the destinations adventure travelers travel to (and the activities they do) often require special guides, groups, and sometimes equipment.

Adventure tourism is now one of the fastest growing trends in travel business. It started with Leo Le Bon who co-founded the world’s first adventure travel company—Mountain Tours with other eight travel mates. Le Bon and others made the first commercial journey to the Annapurna region of Nepal. Since then, the travel business grew rapidly resulting to a plethora of travel companies that offer adventure vacations.

Adventure may involve leisure biking and hiking for some travelers or it may entail base jumping into an underground cave in Mexico.

Nevertheless, a travel involves some fundamental aspects to be classified as adventure. Adventure travel typically includes going to far-flung areas, intermingling with various cultures, and doing a physical activity.

Two categories of adventure travel are hard and soft adventures. Hard adventures fall under extreme and mostly dangerous sporting activity. Examples of hard adventures are rock climbing, surfing, paragliding, and scuba diving in remote locations. Soft adventures, on the other hand, are leisure activities that are often educational. It does not involve strenuous activity unlike hard adventures. Bird watching, religious pilgrimages and architectural tours fall under soft adventures.

Trekking Shoes - 5 Essential Questions to Ask Before You Choose a Trekking Shoe

Trekking Shoes are the most important piece of equipment for trekking. You’ll be treading thousands and thousands of paces in rough country in them and you definitely do not want to spend days or weeks with sore feet, or even worse injure yourself in the wilderness.

So you have to make sure the shoes you have strike the right balance for your trek between comfort, performance, protection and durability.

All Trekking shoes are not equal. Unfortunately there is not really such a thing as a ‘one size fits all’ trekking shoe. Sandals, trail runners, light boots, heavy boots and mountaineering boots are some of the basic types and trekking shoes can have features of more than one basic type.

You can get away with one pair of hiking shoes on several different treks if the treks are fairly similar and not too demanding. But it is a really good idea to get the right kind of shoe for your trek. It makes all the difference in the world being able to walk comfortably and can often mean the difference between a trekking holiday and a trekking adventure.

A lot depends on the terrain you’ll be traversing and how long you’ll be traversing it for. Generally speaking the rougher the country the more you will need a tougher, heavier shoe that will need more wearing in and be less comfortable.
